McDonald’s is entering the chicken sandwich war.
A leaked memo from the fast-food giant confirms that the company is planning to add a chicken item to its breakfast menu in January 2020.
That will likely heat up rivalries with Chick-fil-A and Wendy’s, which have similar tasty offerings. Popeyes already shook up the industry this summer with a chicken sandwich that sold out after two weeks.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s would not confirm or deny that the chain was going to add a chicken sandwich for breakfast, but did say, ‘stay tuned’, as the chain tests markets a couple of options, Business Insider reports.
McDonald’s has been running promotions for a McGriddle chicken sandwich and chicken biscuit, offering both in certain areas for only $2. The restaurant chain has even tested a Chicken McMuffin, borrowing on its game-changing Egg McMuffin, which debuted in 1975.
Chicken is already on the breakfast menu at about half of McDonald’s restaurants around the country, reports Business Insider.
The battle for chicken supremacy comes as rival Chick-fil-A has solidified its top spot among fast food restaurants.
The chain that encourages patrons to ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ has been at the top for four years in a row, while McDonald’s remains at the bottom, according to the annual American Consumer Satisfaction index that polled 23,000 people for their opinions on various consumer offerings, including fast food.
The Christian-run Chick-fi-La, which insists on closing Sundays and has been immune, when it comes to selling fast-food, from criticism over its conservative views and support of groups unfriendly to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people, including organizations that promote so-called conversion therapy to change a person’s sexual orientation.

Competitors took notice, and when Popeye’s sold out two weeks after introducing a new chicken sandwich this summer, it was clear a war had broken out over what chain could take a significant bite out of Chick-fil-A’s dominance.

KeyBanc analysts, recently discussing the outlook on McDonald’s, said in a note that ‘breakfast and chicken are the new battlegrounds’ for fast food, Business Insider reports.

‘Hey @mcdonalds i traveled far and wide to start my day off right with a McChicken Biscuit! I wish all McDonald’s would do this!!’ wrote one patron on Instagram with picture right before she enjoyed her sandwich.
