BARAGA COUNTY, MI — A 37-year-old L’anse woman will spend up to 40 years in prison after she pleaded no contest to a charge of second-degree murder involving a toddler, according to WLUC 6. Genevieve Lynn Meyers was sentenced to a minimum of 22 years and six months in prison for her role in the death of her 2-year-old nephew. A legal guardian took the boy to Baraga County Memorial Hospital in December 2017, after seeing he had several bruises on his body. The boy was airlifted to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he later died. Doctors at that hospital later said the boy, Walker Meyers, had severe brain injuries, extensive bruising and a fractured nose, according to The Mining Journal. They compared the toddler’s injuries with what’s typically seen in a high-speed vehicle crash. Genevieve Meyers was arrested after the autopsy revealed the boy’s injuries. Meyers entered her no-contest plea in August. Such a plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.
