The only way to expunge the bad luck from Friday the 13th is to indulge all weekend in delicious-coated awesomeness washed down with a tasty adult beverage or two. So here are seven ways to live it up in the Bay Area and beyond this weekend, from savoring yummy cheese to worshipping “Sex and the City” to jamming on country music either live or on TV.
And if you’d like to get the Bay Area Weekender delivered straight to your inbox every Thursday, which has been known to bring good luck, just sign up here.
1 SEE, HEAR: It’s a country music weekend
Go ahead, get that “yee haw” out of your system — heaven knows you’ve earned the right. Or save it for this weekend, when country star and TV personality Blake Shelton lands at the SAP Center, as part of a weekend-long celebration of that San Jose venue. Or tune into PBS on Sunday for the first episode of Ken Burns’ epic documentary “Country Music.” Besides awesome footage and more than 100 interviews, it’s full of surprises.
2 EAT: The grand fromage
Forget the lions, tigers and bears — we’re talking brie, bleu and cheddar, oh my! The big SF Cheese Fest is this weekend and there’s a grand tasting on Saturday complete with wine, beer, gypsy jazz and California cheeses galore. Get the scoop, er, wedge here.
3 WATCH: A loving spoof of “Sex and the City”
If you’re a hopeless addict of the iconic HBO series about carnal delights, shopping, clothes and cocktails, you have more options than binge-watching over cosmos. Head thee to San Jose, where Kerry Ipema is performing her solo show devoted to ‘SATC’ for two nights.
4 CELEBRATE: The birthday of Bay Area’s incomparable Jazz Mafia
It was a decade ago that Adam Theis, a Bay Area trombonist with mad skills and a jonesin’ to shake up the local music scene, created the Jazz Mafia and debuted a stunning hodgepodge of genres known as “Brass, Bows & Beats Hip-Hop Symphony.” Now Theis and The Mafia are reviving the piece in a free concert that’s part of the Yerba Buena Festival. Deets are here.
5 PLAY: A Viennese pairing
Ach, mein liebling, looking to amp up your date night? We’ve got 10 awesome ideas, starting with a little Austrian frolic this weekend in San Jose. We’re talking schnitzel, Schatzi — that’s German for treasure or honeybunch — paired with a madcap night of theater.
6 HEAR: Vallejo’s new R&B star play Concord
Ridiculously talented East Bay native Gabi Wilson — aka H.E.R. — comes to Concord Pavilion this weekend with a host of up-and-coming young stars in what’s called the Lights on Festival. It’s part of a sizzling weekend of live music in the Bay Area that also features Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube as well as Brian Wilson. Here’s the roundup.
7 EAT & PLAY: Outdoor cinema
We may be past Labor Day, but outdoor movie season isn’t quite over yet! You can still catch movies under the stars in San Anselmo, St. Helena and Santa Rosa — and also in Concord, where a new Food Truck Cinema series is pairing “Goonies” with tasty bites on Saturday.
